    – Gurinder Chadha, O. T. Fagbenle, Elarica Johnson and Chizzy Akudolu among the guests at the annual short film festival –

London, Sunday 01 December 2019:  Stars from film and TV gathered last night to celebrate the TriForce Short Film Festival (TFSFF), which recognises and supports diverse talent and champions inclusivity.

Film and TV director Gurinder Chadha (Beecham House, Bend It Like Beckham, Blinded by the Light) was joined by O.T. Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale), former Strictly Come Dancing star Chizzy Akudolu (Holby City), Kellie Shirley (In The Long Run, EastEnders) Amanda Mealing (Casualty), Fola Evans-Akingbola (Siren, Black Mirror) and Elarica Johnson (A Discovery of Witches). The Awards were hosted by TriForce Creative Network Founders Jimmy Akingbola (In The Long Run, Cheat, Arrow), Fraser Ayres (Coronation Street) and TCN COO Minnie Ayres.

The Awards were created by the TriForce Creative Network, which aims to readdress the balance of diverse professionals on and off screen in the film and TV industries, as a platform for new and emerging filmmakers to be introduced into the film and TV industry through showcasing their short films. The Festival provides a vital opportunity for underrepresented talent, helping them to access opportunities to further their careers. This year TFSFF showcased the diverse range of filmmaking talent with a high number of BAME and female producers, directors, cast and crew across all the shortlisted films. Building on last year’s gender balanced selections, over 60% of the 16 shortlisted films screened are directed by women, with half of the films having been made by BAME filmmakers.

The star-studded event held at BFI Southbank revealed the winners, which were judged by an esteemed panel including Idris Elba and Gurinder Chadha, at an evening Gala and Awards ceremony.

Winning the Best of the Fest Award and the award for Best Non-Scripted short film was Waves by Jessie Ayles. The short film was recognised for its beautiful cinematography alongside the shocking first-person account of three young girls growing up in one of South Africa’s most violent communities.

The Audience Choice Award, voted by the audience on the night, went to Grandma’s 80th Surprise directed by actor Fola Evans-Akingbola, who is normally seen in front of camera in sci-fi drama Sirens.  The short film told the story of a newly in love respectful young man who is forced to confront his family’s rigid traditions as he seeks the approval of the family matriarch, his formidable 80-year-old Grandmother.

Judge Idris Elba, whose credits include Luther, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Marvel’s Avengers franchise, said; “It’s an honour to be part of the TriForce Short Film Festival judging panel. There is a crucial need in the UK film and TV industry to include voices from every walk of life to ensure our community is one of inclusivity, which is why this festival is so important.”

Minnie Ayres, COO of TriForce Creative Network, said: It’s been an exciting year with the move to BFI Southbank helping us offer a bigger day time programme to support emerging filmmakers. Our judging panel agreed this year’s winning films were hugely compelling and original stories. It’s been an honour to have such a high-profile judging panel, and we can’t wait to get started on next year’s festival!”

Ahead of the evening gala, TFSFF welcomed the public for a day of filmmaking workshops, where aspiring filmmakers had the opportunity to watch the shortlisted films, be inspired by Q&As with filmmakers and industry professionals, and take part in practical filmmaking workshops.

TFSFF boasts a wealth of high profile patrons which include; writer, director and actor Kathy Burke, The Walking Dead star David Morrissey, Broadchurch’s Marianne Jean Baptiste, actor David Oyelowo (Selma), actress Kacey Ainsworth, (Grantchester), producer Hilary Bevan Jones (The Escape Artist), Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), actor, writer and director Noel Clarke (Bulletproof), Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella), Zawe Ashton (Wanderlust) and award-winning playwright Roy Williams OBE.

For the first time this year, TFSFF hosted a new pitching competition for filmmakers, Pitch It! which was supported by partner Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE. The competition saw ten filmmakers, selected from over 300 submissions, pitch live at the event to win the chance to secure up to £10k funding per film. Proving the high-quality of the final films, TriForce and Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE have committed to supporting all ten finalist filmmakers through funding and development.

Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE said: “This is my third year as a judge at TriForce Short Film Festival and it’s fantastic to be back at this BAFTA held event. The standard is improving every year and it’s always encouraging to see so much new talent coming through. I’m proud to be playing my part in supporting the next generation of British film makers and looking forward to working with the winners to make these Shorts.”

All prize winners also receive a copy of HitFilm Pro, a VFX and editing software to help them with their next project, as well as a free subscription to online film academy, Indie Film Hustle.

Minnie Ayres, COO of TriForce Creative Network, said: “We were overwhelmed by the quality of films at this year’s festival. It was incredibly difficult for our judging panel to decide on the winners but we think these films really stood out. It’s fantastic to see such a diverse range of stories and story-tellers and I believe that having a more diverse judging panel results in a wider range of films being recognized for their quality and originality.”

Actor Chizzy Akudolu added: “TriForce Short Film Festival is brilliant. It’s always such a great night, it’s all about inclusivity and everyone has such a great time. There’s a total mix of films, and it’s the best showcase for short films in this country.”

Judge David Gyasi said; “It’s been an honour to be part of the judging panel for this year’s TriForce Short Film Festival. I’m a firm believer in supporting and promoting inclusion in the film industry, which is exactly what this festival is about. It’s great to see so many high-quality films coming through, especially from filmmakers from under-represented backgrounds and I’m proud to be a part of the Festival, which is really driving change towards increased inclusion.”

TFSFF boasts a wealth of high profile patrons which include; writer, director and actor Kathy Burke, The Walking Dead star David Morrissey, Broadchurch’s Marianne Jean Baptiste, actor David Oyelowo (Selma), actress Kacey Ainsworth, (Grantchester), producer Hilary Bevan Jones(The Escape Artist), Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), actor, writer and director Noel Clarke (Bulletproof), Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella), Zawe Ashton (Wanderlust) and award-winning playwright Roy Williams OBE.

  • Pitch it! | Win Short Film Funding!

TriForce Short Film Festival and Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE present: Pitch it! | A chance for short filmmakers to win funding for their next film!

TriForce Short Film Festival have teamed up with London based financier, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE to give UK based filmmakers the opportunity to win funding for their next project.

The competition will be looking for filmmakers to pitch an idea for a short film, with the finalists getting to pitch live to Allesch-Taylor’s team at the TriForce Short Film Festival on Saturday 1st December at BAFTA. Successful filmmakers will have one year to finish their film.

Allesch-Taylor set up a £1m short film fund in 2017 and has already funded over 25 films from this initiative. He is looking to “instil a sense of entrepreneurship into short form content” and would like to see applications not just from projects looking for full funding, but also from projects that may have some funding already in place but need some more to get ‘over the line’.

The Festival Director of TriForce Short Film Festival, Minnie Ayres, said, “we’re very excited to build on our partnership with Stefan Allesch-Taylor. This is a fantastic opportunity for filmmakers to bid for funding for their project and we can’t wait to see the range of applications. We’re looking for ideas with something to make them stand out, whether that’s an undiscovered talent attached, or a really original idea.”

If you’re interested in applying, submissions are open from 3rd October – 2nd November. You can find all the details on how to apply here.

  • Announcing The Pitch Winners!

The winning pitch has been chosen!

ShortsTV in association with TriForce Creative Network have chosen Lorcan Reilly and Alberto Corredor and their project BAGHEAD as the winner of The Pitch.

The Pitch is a film making initiative brought to you by ShortsTV and TriForce, giving filmmakers the opportunity to pitch their next short film idea to a judging panel for the chance to have their short film produced and receive £3000.

After many submissions, scripts were whittled down and five finalists were selected.

On Saturday the five finalists pitched their short film concept to Carter Pilcher (CEO ShortsTV), Stephanie Charmail (Head of Production, ShortsTV) and Minnie Ayres (TriForce Short Film Festival). Each shortlisted filmmaker had up to two minutes to pitch and then faced up to 15 minutes of questions about their script, how it will be filmed and their budget.

It was a tough decision, with all five finalists putting in a memorable pitch, but we could only choose one! We’re going to be supporting the other finalists to fundraise for their projects, so keep an eye out on our social media for links to their crowdfunding campaigns.
