  • Sorry, I Didn’t Know Returns!

ITV have recommissioned Sorry, I Didn’t Know, the only comedy panel show about Black history, and we are looking for new writers to join the writers’ room.

Jimmy Akingbola will return to host the new series which will air in October on ITV and ITV Hub, as part of ITV’s Black History Month celebrations. Chizzy Akudolu and Judi Love will also be back as the team leaders.

This year we are looking for two new writers to join showrunner Fraser Ayres in the series writing room. The opportunity will be open to anyone in a drive to find a new wave of comedy writers and give them their first broadcast credit.

“The world of writing for comedy panel shows is incredibly difficult to break into, so we’re opening up the doors to find writing talent that might not usually get this opportunity. We don’t care what you’ve done before, or whether you have an agent – we just want to find people who are funny, passionate and love Black history to go on this exciting journey with us” said Fraser Ayres of TriForce Productions.

Last year’s series welcomed guests including Colin Salmon, Angie Le Mar, Tom Allen and Russell Kane, and in partnership with Dandi.org.uk, hired a fully inclusive team behind the camera as well.

Sorry, I Didn’t Know is commissioned by Joe Mace and Gemma John Lewis in ITV Entertainment Commissioning.

“We’re very excited to have SIDK return for a second series” said Joe Mace, ITV Commissioning Editor, Entertainment. “After last year’s successful debut, we’ve expanded the show to 5 episodes and can’t wait to welcome new writers onto the team.”

Writers will be able to apply via the TriForce Creative Network website with submissions open from midday on 10 June to 11.59pm 24 June.

For more details on the competition and how to apply, go to https://thetcn.com/apply-to-write-for-sorry-i-didnt-know/

Sorry, I Didn’t Know is produced by TriForce Productions and was created by husband and wife team, Mr and Mrs Ayres.

  • WriterSlam Gets UKTV Boost

UKTV are partnering with TriForce Creative Network to turbo charge their groundbreaking WriterSlam programme.

The successful programme has been running for over ten years, with the very first winner, Sophie Petzal, now an award winning writer and many other first time writers getting their first development commission and an agent through the programme. Over the years the TCN has partnered with (amongst others) Amazon, Hat Trick, Audible and Sky on these events

UKTV will be taking WriterSlam to the next level, promising not just a development commission, but a greenlit season of originals on Dave in 2021/22.

As usual the WriterSlam competition is open to any UK resident, regardless of their previous experience or age. Whether your script is about telling a story we’ve never seen on TV before, or whether it’s simply a universal story told by a different voice, we want to hear from you. We want writers who represent the society that we live in, and who will offer different perspectives, experiences and opinions.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have an agent, or have never written professionally before – if you live in the UK, and you’ve got an ideaor a story to tell, we want to hear it.

    Competition Details

UKTV will select six writers who will receive a paid development commission to work up their original TV ideas into 30’ scripts suitable for broadcast and for potential expansion into full length series. These writers will benefit from several writing workshops in addition to working with a script editor and experienced executive producer over a three month period. Individual mentoring and support from TriForce Creative Network will also be available over this timeframe, culminating in a table read of all six scripts performed by a troupe of handpicked professional actors which will help inform the final selection process

Four of these scripts will then be green lit to be produced for Dave, with TriForce Productions taking on some of the shows but with others being produced by emerging Indies to make under their umbrella with support from TriForce Productions. All the productions will be supported by D and I – TriForce’s diversity and inclusion support service, to help them crew up in an inclusive way. Its anticipated that the season will air on Dave either in late 2021 or early 2022.

Pete Thornton, Head of Scripted, UKTV, said, “We’re excited to be working with TriForce Creative Network and DandI.org.uk on this unique UKTV WriterSlam and to be throwing this opportunity open to all underrepresented voices from any background. This is a truly inclusive initiative, and we want to hear from people from ethnic minorities, those from underserved socio-economic groups, the LGBTQ community, those who identify as having a disability and basically anybody who feels that their voice isn’t currently heard clearly on our screens. We’re offering dedicated support and mentoring over a three-month writing period and then the opportunity to see your show prepped, cast, shot, edited, marketed and broadcast on Dave next year.”

“This is what a ‘360° approach’ actually looks like“ said Fraser Ayres, Executive Producer and CEO TriForce Creative NetworkIf we’re going to find more Michaela Cole’s and Tim Renkow’s we need to develop pathways that provide access and then perhaps those much needed voices won’t have to traverse so many obstacles to be heard. This move is unprecedented and kudos to UKTV for taking this tangible and giant step to truly move the dial with us.

“By utilising our dandI.org.uk talent pool, we’re in a unique position to ensure inclusion and open access at all levels” added Minnie Ayres, Executive Producer and dandI.org.uk CEO. “From creatives to crew this will be fully inclusive, allowing us to also address the gaps we have identified by levelling up talent that is ready, but yet to be given their shot.

Writers will be asked to submit a onepage pitch of their idea, as well as a 10-15 page sample of their writing.

Submissions are open from midday Thurs 18 Feb – 11:59pm Thurs 25 Mar 2021. For more information on how to submit, go the WriterSlam page. https://thetcn.com/writerslam/

A separate call out will be going out for emerging production companies to coproduce oa number of of the projects later in the year.

  • Get your feature idea into development!

Calling all writers! We’re launching #ScriptSearch with Greenacre Films, to help them find their next feature film project to develop.

We did of course consider delaying this programme until after the crisis, but we felt that it would be best to keep going and offer this amazing development opportunity for writers, especially as it will result in paid commissions.

If you’re stuck at home and looking to flex those creative muscles, check out all the details below and get entering!

Greenacre Films, producers of Netflix Original feature film Been So Long starring Michaela Coel and Arinze Kene, are looking for exciting new film ideas to take into paid development. It is free to enter, and all we need you to submit is a 2 page pitch of a feature film idea and 10-15 pages of the script.

Now, more than ever, it is hugely important to give a platform to unheard voices. Through Script Search, Greenacre are looking to provide diverse talent with a burning feature film idea the opportunity to develop that idea further with support from their team. We’re looking for stories that you feel haven’t been told before – in any genre at all. This is open to all, with or without literary agents. We want fresh, original projects that haven’t been out in the world yet, so bring us your newest work!

The projects are going to be developed over the next year or so, so please don’t be limited by current social distancing restrictions in your writing.

If you’ve been writing away on continuing drama, or working on short form content, this is your opportunity to get that feature film idea developed.

Greenacre will choose the projects they’d like to take through to the next stage. Selected writers will receive a fee to develop their idea into a 10 page treatment. If you are then selected to go through and are asked to develop the full script, you will be paid industry standard fees.

“We’re excited to be working with the Triforce Creative Network on #ScriptSearch. We’re keen to find exciting new projects – and it’s great to offer writers the rare chance to have their feature film idea developed”  Nadine Marsh-Edwards, Greenacre Films.

We originally planned to invite 10 writers to a writing workshop in London, with Greenacre’s producers then select some projects to take forward into paid development. Due to the coronavirus, we are going to move this workshop online, which we intend to take place on Wed 02 Sept 2020.

Submissions are open from 08 June  – 11.59pm on 19 July 2020. For more information on how to submit, go the entry page.

  • A new spin on WriterSlam with Audible!

Calling all writers! Win a paid development commission with Audible!

Following the success of WriterSlam with Amazon Studios, we’re partnering with their sister company, Audible, to find new and exciting scripted projects that are perfectly suited for audio. With over 400,000 audiobooks, Audible Original dramas, podcasts and short stories, Audible are constantly on the hunt for new writing talent.

We’re looking for new voices who come from all backgrounds. We champion diversity of experience – if you include everyone, you don’t need to exclude anyone.

Through the WriterSlam, Audible is looking to provide fresh, diverse talent an opportunity to share and develop their untold stories in the form of audio drama with help from industry experts. We’re looking for ambitious and transformational stories that celebrate the medium of audio and spotlight themes of diversity and inclusion. We’re open to all genres with a particular love of Crime and Thriller, Fantasy and mythology (especially those tales inspired by non-Western traditions), SciFi, smart Horror, RomComs, dramatizations of true stories, and History that sheds light on the present. Beyond a great story we look for global appeal, series with the potential to return for multiple seasons, and worlds and characters that will inspire fandoms.

The winning writer will be selected by Audible’s panel of judges. The winner will receive a paid development commission and will work with Audible’s commissioning editors and casting team to develop a treatment and a one hour pilot episode. A successful pilot may even go on to be commissioned for a full series!

‘We’re so excited to be working with the Triforce Creative Network on WriterSlam. We know there’s so much fantastic writing talent out there, and we’re looking forward to celebrating original, emerging storytellers!’ Rachel Naughton, Audible.

The selected finalists will have extracts of their work performed at a showcase event in London on Thurs 14 May 2020, when the winner will be selected by a panel of judges. The event will be attended by industry guests and a limited number of tickets will be available to the public.

WriterSlam is open to everyone – you do not have to have an agent or have written anything before.

Make sure you have a listen to some series on Audible before you submit – you can adapt a script initially conceived for screen or stage or write an original one, but please think carefully about it being an AUDIO script – it is a bit different to it being for TV! Think about ways in which you can experiment with ambitious ideas that might be less achievable on screen.

Some tips for writing audio drama:

    • The only limit is the listener’s imagination.
    • Your audience can’t see! Be their eyes!
    • Is your dialogue flowing while also providing necessary information?
    • Aim for a variety of characters, voices, locations, and sounds.
    • Don’t overpopulate scenes.
    • Embrace silence as well as sound.
    • Provide concise stage directions, but speech is the most important tool in telling the story.
    • Use subtle signposts for changes in scene, location, and time.
    • Keep things simple.
    • Keep up the pace and hold onto your audience’s interest!
    • There are always exceptions to the rules—be creative!

You can sign up for a 30 day free trial at https://www.audible.co.uk/

Submissions are open from Monday 10 February – 11.59pm on Sunday 22 March 2020. For more information on how to submit, go the WriterSlam page.

  • Try out as a writer for “Have I Got News For You” with Hat Trick Productions

We’ve joined forces with Hat Trick Productions to help them find fresh new talent for their writing pool on the legendary ‘Have I Got News For You’.

Maybe you’re a stand up, sitcom writer or you’ve written comedy or comedy gags for radio, podcasts, television or online … Have a look for more details below on what they’re looking for and how to apply.

Call out for writers with funny bones…

Hat Trick are looking for new writers to try out for Have I Got News For You. We’re looking for people who are great at coming up with gags and one liners, and who are familiar with the style of the show. Writing for HIGNFY is a unique experience, but it would be great if you had some previous experience as a comedy writer, whether that’s as a stand up, a sitcom writer or perhaps writing comedy or comedy gags for radio, podcasts, TV or online.

Hat Trick will meet with a shortlist of 10 writers for a workshop day in London, with up to 4-5 writers then going forward to ‘try out’ as gag writers on the next series of HIGNFY, which will be filming during April and May 2020. Each writer will attend one or two days during the run, to join a small writing team and work on the show. Writers who get to this stage will be paid a standard day rate fee.

    Who are Hat Trick?

Hat Trick is one of the largest independent production companies in the media production industry.  Their hits are many and varied and include Father Ted, Whose Line Is it Anyway, Outnumbered, Episodes, Room 101, Dinner Date, Derry Girls and Have I Got News For You.

Recognising the diversity of audience and the changing landscape of platforms and content providers, they want Hat Trick employees to reflect those audiences and create an environment that truly champions new voices.

    What’s the process?

    1. Apply through the TCN website

Applications will be open from 03 February 2020 to 11.59pm on 15 February 2020.

We’d like you to fill out a short application form, including a short paragraph on why you’d like to write for HIGNFY and upload your CV.

We’ll also be asking you to submit some gags for the “In the news this week…” opening VT section, and for the “And I leave you with news…” still photos at the end of the show. You will probably already be familiar with these sections but here is a link to the latest compilation show with some good examples: HIGNFY Compilation

On this compilation, the “In the news this week” section can be viewed from 0:21 to 1:10, and the “And I leave you with news…” section can be viewed from 27:13 to the end.

Go to Stills and VTs to see a selection of pictures and short videos – this is typical of the kind of material you would have to work with on the show. We’d like you to submit 5 gags based on these – you can choose which you use – and add them to your application.

    1. Training Day at Hat Trick

Up to 10 shortlisted candidates will be chosen by Hat Trick (in collaboration with the TCN) to attend a training day on Wed 26 February 2020 at the Hat Trick offices in Camden.

The aim of this day is to give you and Hat Trick a chance to get to know each other as well as familiarise you with the HIGNFY writing process.

    1. Try Outs

Following the training day, up to 4-5 writers will be invited to attend Try Out writing days during April and May when the series is on air, for which they will be paid a day rate.

    1. Next Steps

Hat Trick are hoping to find some writers who can join the writing team for subsequent series, so those who do well during the ‘try outs’ may well be invited back in the future.

    Who can apply?

Anyone can apply – although it would help if you have some comedy writing experience, perhaps as a stand up, a sitcom writer or perhaps writing comedy or comedy gags for radio, podcasts, TV or online.

    Who can apply?

Please do read the below criteria and ONLY apply if it describes your background; if you’re inexperienced we know how tempting it is to whack in an application on the off chance but we’ll genuinely only shortlist candidates who can demonstrate how they meet our requirements.

    • Some understanding of the mechanics of script editing but importantly with an eye for original ideas and how writers / stories may be appropriate for different audiences and platforms.

    • Knowledge of the content market, different broadcasters, platforms and programme styles
    • Good contacts and relationships across the comedy world with writers and talent
    • Confidence and tenacity to pursue talent, overcome obstacles, and pitch ideas to senior colleagues
    • Able to work with emerging talent – quick at building rapport and confidence with writers and performing talent
    • An ambitious outlook but with an ability to support others in the team
    • Flexibility to work (and network) in evenings and weekends

    What will the role involve?

This is a new role in the Hat Trick Scripted department. They’re looking for an individual who, having already had relevant experience is ambitious to build their career as a Producer of programming in the comedy field.

This role will be to support existing development and commissioned projects within the team. Initially this will include script editing, development producer support on delegated projects and working with the team on commissioner initiatives. Through the year this will probably extend to hands on responsibilities in production.

Alongside the above the individual will also have a focused output for their own initiatives and an entrepreneurial spirit. They will be responsible for identifying emerging talent on the circuit (writers and performers) and crucially assessing if and where there could be a fit with Hat Trick activities.

During the 12-month period we would like to see this role doing the following:

    • Submitting an agreed project into BBC3 and C4/E4
    • Producer a pilot or funded development for a broadcaster

  • Search for Songwriters…

We’re supporting production company Monkey Kingdom in their search for talented songwriters for their new show, Songland. If you’re an indiscovered songwriting talent, check out the details below:

Every hit starts with the seed of a melody, a lyric, a hook – which together grow into a song.

For as long as we can remember the songwriter has been the unsung hero of the music world, while the singer takes centre stage. But that’s all about to change with a television show that puts the songwriter in the spotlight.

Channel 4 is excited to announce a new music show where unknown, gifted songwriters will get the incredible opportunity to present their song to a panel of the music industry’s most exciting, prolific and successful music producers and songwriters. They will be given the chance to collaborate on their song with the producers in a recording studio, transforming their song into a potential hit for a UK recording artist.

“Songland” is already in production in the USA under the creative guidance of Executive Producer Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and with the combined music might of hit making powerhouses Ryan Tedder, Ester Dean and Shane McAnally. Songland is now launching in the UK.

We are looking for true talent: musicians who hold the writing process closer to their hearts than the performance.

If this is YOU, please download and fill in the application form and return to [email protected].  You’ll need to move fast – auditions will take place between late April and early May 2019.

We are asking each songwriter to submit their two best songs for consideration.

We are accepting applications from across the UK, from songwriters aged 16 and above.

    Good luck!

    The Songland Team
